Holy Guacamole!!

I found a TRI COACH!! Finally! And it all happened so clandestinely…

Poor Tridad has been helping me schlep through my options and all the thoughts running rampant in my head… he even hooked me up with his former coach (who freakin rocks, BTW).  They both gave me some clarity as I was able to process through some of my needs (I have high expectations) and limitations (on a pretty low budget).

I had gotten to a place this weekend where I was feeling pretty hopeless that I would even find someone that I could afford that was even worth hiring. Then today happened…

TODAY - seemed like it might be a day marked by loss and disappointment at every turn… THEN, LifewithKim declared it a good day and I thought I may as well try it too…

Within the hour I was getting an email from Jay Curwen - my new coach.  His wife is Sweet P’s teacher and she knew I was looking for a coach so she told him about me and asked if he could help me find someone. This guy is legend here in Asheville and all over the Southeast. He is a beast! And he retired from coaching a couple years ago. BUT… but, he said he wants to coach me and we have almost all the details worked out. To make matters even more wonderful, he is really good friends with Jose, my swim coach. Jay will work out swim logistics and Jose will do all the hands on coaching for swim. PEEEEERFECT!!

I am so EXCITED!! I may have done a little happy dance… several times already!

Check him out www.JayCurwen.com

My Swim Coach at Regionals...  → facebook.com

He is the guy way out front. He did great, even with all the guys using this race as practice for the Olympic qualifiers. Obviously, he is headed to Nationals. I am so proud of him!

BTW, that is his wife (my training partner, Jenny) and their kids cheering in the background. I love the boys saying “go daddy, go daddy, go daddy!”

EDIT: The time clock says his time was 29:37. For the record, I can barely do 50M in that time!

Is there a way to take a video off FB to post on here? My swim coach just raced at the regional masters meet this weekend and I wanted to post the video.

Ortho Recap

I mentioned before that the Orthopedic doc I finally found has been really great and he understands running and triathlon - which is as important to me as any of his medical knowledge. On my first visit, pre-marathon, the goal was to get me through the marathon with as little pain as possible. I saw some moderate improvements in my knee leading up to the marathon and was able to do the bare minimum of training those last 3 weeks because of the help he gave me. And he did get me through the marathon = Goal #1 a success!

He told me this next appointment would be to “put things back together” after the race.

THE GOOD:

Current Diagnosis:  Patella Tendonitis, IT Band Syndrome, Bursitis, possible fissures in the cartilage under my knee cap (not at all severe)

My Options for ITBS:

Steroid (Cortizone) injections at the lateral insertion site.  This is a “fix” that we would use 2-3 weeks before my next event (Half Ironman) if necessary to get me through the race more pain free. I would have to reduce my training for a couple days after the injection. He said there is VERY little chance of tendon rupture at this site because the IT band is under very little stress - he has NEVER seen a rupture of the IT. It becomes irritated because of rubbing against bone, mostly, and the “yanking” that is required to stabilize the knee if the stabilizer muscles are weak. The steroid will reduce inflammation & reduce the rubbing and irritation. It will last about 6 weeks and is sometimes a fairly permanent fix - if you get the PT required to strengthen the stabilizing muscles around the knee during the effective time.

PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) Treatment - I found this one fascinating!!  It is a fairly new procedure. They take MY blood, centrifuge it to separate out the platelets & plasma, then inject the platelets-plasma combo at the lateral insertion site of the IT band. I would have to reduce my training for a couple days following injections. This promotes healing by stimulating your body’s immune system to have a faster, more aggressive response to the injured area - essentially the platelet injection simulates inflammation. I would likely need more than one injection (up to 6) and the whole process might take as much as 6 weeks. This is a long-term, permanent fix… as long as you do PT to strengthen the stabilizing muscles of the knee so the IT band doesn’t become injured again.

*** RUNLONG, He said this works GREAT in Achilles tendonitis - and that is where it was initially studied.

My Options for Patella Tendonitis / Bursitis:

Steroid injection under my knee cap and the sites of pain - This is basically the same as above, but does carry a higher risk of tendon rupture.

Hyalgan Injections - This is a 6 injection series of a drug that promotes healing in cartilaginous tissues.  It is permanent for some people, and others need yearly injections after the first series. He doesn’t think I will need the yearly injections because we are not dealing with arthritis, but “early onset changes of the joint” in my knee (damn gymnastics!).  I will have to make a call about doing this way before a race. I am thinking (and he totally agreed) I will try to make it through the Half Ironman and then decide what to do about the injections before even starting the major ramp-up in training for Ironman. I am seriously considering this! Mainly because of the “early changes” he sees in my knee and he is pretty concerned that I could have early onset arthritis in both of my knees. There will be MRI’s if I go this route - because I will want him to have better information if I go this route.

THE BAD:

Though he does not seem like the kind of doc to suggest missing a race, he suggested I skip NOLA. He said it wasn’t a necessity, but would go a long way toward helping get my knee on a better track for the Half Ironman. We discussed me doing the half marathon instead of the full, but his suggestion remained the same - “unless this race is important to your overall goals for the year.”

I am torn… it is important for my social goals… but is just a bonus for my athletic goals… I am going to sit on it a few days and hopefully have a new coach this week to talk to, as well.  I also need to see what kind of penalty we will have with our plane tickets. I want to scream that this ISN’T FAIR!!

Lots to think about for sure…

OMG! I am SOOOO Tired!

I have 5 kids asleep (finally!) and a hubby at the Fire Dept. Yep, I am a genius… spend the night party with no other adults to help? SURE! How bad can it be?

EXHAUSTING!!! That is how bad… I’m not even sure Ironman will exhaust me like this… well, it probably will.

I got good news, great news, and really bad news at the Ortho today.  And tons of great IT band treatment options. I want to share ALL he told me, but I want to do it coherently. SO, tomorrow, I promise. This guy is awesome - and he is a marathoner and thinks ultrarunners are the bee’s knee! AND he has treated many Ironman triathletes. So clearly, he is smart!! Tomorrow… tomorrow!

Oooooo! I am learning so much from my Ortho today!!! Can’t wait to share… Will post all the details when I get home.

I feel like Shortmom...

I’ve got so much work to do, a trainer workout, and a swim.  Yet, all I want to do is catch up on my dash… so in Shortmom fashion, I will earn you!

Somebody slap my hand if I am back on here in the next 4 hours!

It's 9:36am...

And I am sipping a cup of coffee and snuggling with my kiddos. And just enjoying what is a very rare relaxing weekend morning. My weekends are typically dominated by whatever long workouts are on the schedule and I try to get them in early so that the rest of my day is free. I will get on my trainer today, but I don’t have to do it right now… so I’m sipping coffee and listening to giggles in our jammies.

Small luxuries are always the best!

Today is good already!

Up at 6:30 to take my kids and the neighbor kids to a 1K hill climb race that is part of our Hot Chocolate 10K, here in Asheville.  Kids did great! POURING DOWN RAIN!! After the 10K race started, and I got the kids in the car and dry, Luke entertained them while I ran the 10K course backwards to meet a friend that is running her FIRST RACE EVER!! Met her about half way and ran her in. She was amazing… did I mention it was POURING DOWN RAIN. the finish is at the top of a .5mi hill. She conquered that and I was so proud of her!!

Then home to make Rach’s pancakes for the fam… A HIT! The neighbor kids may move in if I promise to make them on a regular basis. They were really delicious! WAY better than regular pancakes, I think.

Run with Rach: Quick Paleo Pancakes → runwithrach.com

I need to find this easily because I NEED to make these tomorrow… sorry for all of you that already read it.

runwithrach:

  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce
  • 1/2 cup almond butter
  • 1/4 tsp vanilla
  • sprinkle of cinnamon

Cook like you would any kind of pancake. The batter is a little thin, so the key is to keep the cakes small (3 inches) and ”roll” the cake instead of flipping it. This will make 6-8 3 inch…

Recovery...

well, I am just bored! Tapper and recovery only agree with me for about one day… then I am just cranky and thinking of all the training that has to be done for the next thing on my calendar. And ill because I can’t DO them. I always feel like somebody has put me into a holding pattern like a plane that wants to do something, anything other than fly in circles going nowhere!

I have been given very stern “NO RUNNING” orders from the PT to allow my knee to heal. So I swam 1000m on Monday and took yesterday off because my knee was achy Monday night (all night). Today, I swim again.

Also, I am on the hunt for a new coach. My coach and I split very amicably - I do love her. It was time for me to go to a more balanced triathlon approach and time for her to take a break from coaching to handle some family stuff. It all worked out well for both of us.  BUT, but… I NEED A COACH!!

Yikes!! Gulf Coast Half Ironman is only 15 weeks away! OMG!! Will I be ready? I have this knee thing… and a very busy season at work… and NOLA… and I am dancing in a production… all between now and then!  Aaaahhhhhh! I would feel so much better if I had a plan.
